DUALITY

SYNOPSIS
This is a story that buttresses the saying “don’t judge a book by its cover”.

The story is built around two women (Iya Kola and Mama Shade) who are misjudged by their physical looks.

TREATMENT

1. INT. SITTING ROOM – NIGHT

Mama Kola leads the family prayer.

2. INT. KOLA’S ROOM – DAY
Mama Kola walks into Kola’s room and sees her son gasping for breath.

3. INT. CHIEF’S ROOM – DAY
Iya Kola dashes into Chief’s room.

4. INT. DOCTOR OFFICE - NOON
Iya Kola is told about her son’s state of health.

5. INT. SITTING ROOM – DAY
Chief Gbadamosi’s tries to console Iya Kola hut she insist on dealing with Iya Shade.

(I will make you suffer if you continue to…)

6. EXT. OFFICE PREMISES – DAY
Iya Kola is stopped from entering the office.
(… Madam, Oga Segun say make you no enter)

7. INT. CHIEF’S ROOM – NOON
Chief Gbadamosi lies critically ill on the bed while his amiable wife, Iya Shade takes care of him.

8. INT. PASTOR’S OFFICE – DAY
Iya Shade beckons on Pastor Chris to follow her to her house and pray for her husband and stepson.

9. INT. CHIEF’S ROOM – NOON
Pastor Chris prays for Chief and his son.

10. INT. MAMA SHADE’S ROOM
Mama Shade goes into her room to get olive oil for Pastor Chris.

FADE IN

1. INT. SITTING ROOM – NIGHT
Feeling tired and drowsy, Chief Gbadamosi beckons on Iya Shade to lead the family prayer while Iya Kola looks at her with jealousy.

CHIEF
(slowly)
Iya Shade, please
lead us in prayer.

IYA KOLA
(snaps)
But, Chief, it’s
Just 10pm.

CHIEF
(angrily)
I am tired and want to
Sleep, does it affect you
in any way? You this troublesome
woman.

iya Kola frowns at Chief and snaps her fingers at Iya Shade.
IYA SHADE
(calmly)
Let us be in the
Mood of prayer.

IYA KOLA
(harshly)
Reverend mother, please,
hurry up and stop wasting
our precious time.


CHIEF
(angrily)
Iya Kola, Iya Kola, Iya Kola,
How many times did I call you?
If I hear a word from you again
till the end of this prayer, I
swear, heaven will have you as
a visitor.





IYA KOLA (calmly)
I am sorry Chief.

she looks at Iya Shade with anger

IYA KOLA
(calmly)
In Jesus name…


2. INT. KOLA’S ROOM – DAY
Mama Kola walks into her son’s room and sees him gasping for breath.

IYA KOLA Kola, Kola, somebody
Help me o, my enemies
are at work.

she rushes to Chief’s room.

3. INT. CHIEF’S ROOM – DAY
CHIEF
(angrily)
Iya Kola what is your problem this
early morning? Why do you have
to greet me with so mush noise?


IYA KOLA
(shouting and crying)
Chief, my son is dying,
My son is dying, please
Don’t let my only son die.

chief looks at her furiously and rushes to Kola’s room.

4. INT. DOCTOR’S OFFICE – NOON
Mama Kola dashes into the doctor’s office, Chief walks calmly behind her after a call has been pt thought to them to come to the doctor’s office.

IYA KOLA
(on her feet)
Doctor! Hope nothing
has happened to my son?





CHIEF
(calmly)
Good afternoon doctor.

chief looks at Iya Kola with disappointment.


DOCTOR
(wearing a smile)
Good afternoon Chief,
Madam please have your sit.
points at the seat before him

DOCTOR (CONT’D)
Chief, I can see that
Your wife is very appre-
hensive. Can I speak with
you privately?

chief tries to stand and Iya Kola holds him back.

IYA KOLA
(shakes her head)
No way! Chief you are not
going anywhere. Kola is our
son and we must both hear about
his health, final!

chief gets furious and raises his hand to hit her but was stopped by the doctor.

DOCTOR
Chief, please let her
be, its okay, you can
both hear about Kola’s
state of health.

he looks at both of them and clears his throat.


DOCTOR (CONT’D)
Actually, God really
loves your son and that
is why he is still alive








IYA KOLA
(smiling)
Doctor, thank you very
Much, my enemies have been
put to shame.

she looks at Chief scornfully and winks at him while the doctor tries to get back her attention.

DOCTOR
Madam, your son is alive
but not in a good state.


IYA KOLA and CHIEF
(unison)
What is wrong with him?


DOCTOR
Your son will not be able to
walk and talk again.

IYA KOLA
(shouting)
It is you that will not walk and
talk again in your life.

she pulls the doctor by his shirt but he carefully removes her hands and leaves the room.
Chief leaves the room helpless while his wife runs after him crying.

IYA KOLA
(crying)
Chief, so you are going,
You have destroyed my life.
So this is your plan with your
new wife? I will not agree, I
must deal with you two.

5. INT. SITTING ROOM – DAY
Iya Kola is seen abusing Iya Shade Chief tries to calm her down but she but she remains adamant.










IYA KOLA
You this witch, I will
Make this life unbearable
for you.

She gets up from her seat and moves closer to Iya Shade to pick up a fight but Chief held her back.

CHIEF
(angrily)
What is wrong with you?
Why not let this woman be?
Is she the cause of your son’s
ill-state of health?

IYA SHADE
(calmly)
Chief, please don’t be angry,
I can feel her pain.
(turning to Iya Kola) God will definitely heal your son.

Iya Kola angrily grabs her by her cloth.


IYA KOLA
You witch, what do you know about
my feelings. Your daughter will
go crippled and blind before
i can believe you.

IYA KOLA (CONT’D)
If you know about what one feels,
you would have not accepted to marry
Chief knowing fully well that he
has a wife.

IYA SHADE
(on her knees)
Please, Iya Kola lets live in…

iya Kola interrupts









IYA KOLA
If I ever hear you call me again,
I swear, I will twist that dirty mouth
you use in kissing and praying to God.

CHIEF
Mama Kola, Mama Kola,
why are you full of trouble?

IYA KOLA
Let me be full of trouble
because I speak the truth.

pointing at Iya Shade

I will make you suffer if you
continue to live in this house.

she snaps her fingers, rains some insultive words on them and leaves the sitting room.


6. EXT. OFFICCE PREMISES-DAY
Iya kola smiles at Sule (the gateman) and tries to enter the office but she was stopped by him.

SULE
Madam, u no fit enter inside
IYA KOLA
(smiling)
Sule, abeg, I’m not in the
mood for your jokes now.

she tries to ignore him and open the door but he stopped her again.

SULE
(looking furious)
madam, I say u no fit enter,
oga Segun say make you no enter
here again and he say make I
give you this.

he gives her an envelope.








IYA KOLA
(looking surprised)
So, sule even if Oga Segun
tell you say make I no
enter, na im come make
you dey shout for my head.

sule looks away while Iya Kola opens the envelope.

IYA KOLA (CONT’D)
O my God! What is this?
What have I done? Why is God
allowing so much calamity
to befall me?

looking helpless, she turns to leave but was held back by Sule.

SULE
(calmly)
madam, abeg no vex, na order
I dey follow.

iya kola nods her head and walks away


7. INT. CHIEF GBADAMOSI’S ROOM-NOON
Chief groans in pains while Iya shade is seen mobbing his head with a wet towel and iya kola suddenly opens the door.
IYA KOLA
Chief, chief o, the worst
has happened.

seeing Iya Shade in the room mobbing chief’s head, she pulls her away from him and begins to beat her.

IYA KOLA (CONT’D)
This woman, what is your mission
in this house? Since you came,
it has been from one problem
to another. I must kill you before
you kill everyone.
Iya agba pulls iya shade from her and gives iya kola a slap on her cheek.








IYA AGBA
(angrily)
Kilo manse iwo kini buruku yi?
i have told my son to send you
packing but he would not listen.
You are the one bringing problems
to this house Aje ni o!


IYA KOLA
(crying)
mama, you blame me for all the problems
after living with chief for five years


without problems before he brought in this thing he calls a wife.

IYA AGBA
Elenu oshi, you are calling
this angel sent from God
a thing. Let me tell you if
not for her prayers
your son and chief would have
been dead by now. If anything
should happen to my son, I will
destroy you and your family.


IYA SHADE
(kneeling)
mama, please it is enough,
let us keep praying, nothing
will happen to anybody by God’s grace.

IYA AGBA

helping Shade up
stand up jare, omo gidi

pointing at iya kola

One day you must confess your
sins and you will be stoned to death.

Iya kola leaves the room in tears.







8.INT. PASTOR’S OFFICE-DAY
Iya Shade walks into the pastor’s office looking very worried.

PASTOR
Iya Shade, what is the problem?

IYA SHADE
(sobbing)
Pastor, my house is on fire,
everything is going wrong in my house.
you have to come and pray for my
husband and step-son.


PASTOR
(authoritatively)
we serve a God that answereth by fire and as
such, we should not be afraid of whatever
comes our way.

iya Shade says some silent prayers with her eyes shut while the pastor continues to profess positive things on her family.

PASTOR (CONT’D)
Iya Shade there is a yoke to be broken
In your family

they both leave for Chief’s house in a hurry.

9.INT. CHIEF GBADAMOSI’S ROOM- NOON
Pastor Chris enters chief’s room singing and sprinkling holy water around the room.

PASTOR
(authoritatively)
you are healed in Jesus name


IYA SHADE
Amen
Pastor Chris beckons on Iya Shade to join him in an agreement prayer. After praying for a while, he demands for anointing oil and Iya Shade rushes to get it.






10.INT. IYA SHADE’S ROOM-NOON
Iya Shade is seen in her full regalia, carrying a calabash and making some incantations.

IYA SHADE
Mo ki yin o eyin iya
Mi oshorogan, apani
Ma jeni, olokioru
Ohun ti a be so fun ogbon
Logbon gbo, ohun ti a be so fun
Ogba, logba ngba’
Pastor Chris, mo pao lase wipe
ko dake.

believing that her charm had worked on the pastor, she hurries to remove her regalia. Suddenly the egg she tied round her waist fell and broke and then she gave a loud cry that attracted the Gbadamosi’s and pastor Chris to the room.
IYA SHADE
(screaming)
Ye! Ye! Ye!
Egbami o

MAMA AGBA
Iya Shade, kile wo yi?
Kilo se o ti o fin kigbe?

she tried moving closer to her but Pastor Chris stopped her.
PASTOR
Mama, please don’t move close to her
he sprinkles the holy water on her and she screams even louder. Iya Kola looks on with amazement.


IYA SHADE
I did it, I am sorry for everything,
Iya Kola is not a witch

She is just fighting innocently
Please, help me I’m dying.
Yes, I made her sacked and I wanted chief
and kola dead.

iya kola screams and embraces her son and chief who are now standing and looking very healthy.







IYA AGBA
(slowly)
ase ikoko ti nje efo
Idi efo lowa. Ha! Aye ma ni kao
